Sorry for the lack of updates on SS folks. It’s been a busy spring/summer for everyone. We have had a lot of visitors and a lot of projects going. Were working on new books an getting ready for some shows. Nothing we can really brag about at this point, but we will be posting updates soon.

We also have some new toys on the way.

We have purchased a button making set up and a vinyl cutter. This will allow us to generate our own swag for pennies compared to outsourcing. We will be able to make 1 1/4 inch buttons and magnets(and bottle openers?). I ordered over 1000 pins worth of materials, so we should have plenty of play room for trying out ideas. The vinyl cutter will do 25″ wide rolls and can make stickers, banners, iron-on transfers and anything else vinyl related. I have a small selection of various vinyl hues on the way, so if anyone has idea for projects, let us know!

The studio is getting reorganised as well. We are adding some much needed storage and switching some work surfaces around to make the space a little more open. Were going to try and get some electricity to the north wall to help with the extension cord octopus we have been living with. We have a new TV so we can see all of John Stewart’s moles and I can actually read the #$% text in FFXIII when I play!

Tonight was a night of planning for our series of installations at the Borg Ward! The following is a brief synopsis of each participant’s proposal for the space (or at least the ideas that they have so far):

Pietro

Creating a series of “objects” that consist of electronics and interesting things encapsulated in epoxy. These will be presented with long, thin pieces of wood as a sort of “curtain” with lights shining behind it to make it glow.

Creating a series of angular sculptures upon with we can draw, build, or do anything else with.

Holly

Creating abstracted natural environments, clustered within specific areas of the gallery that are not ideal spots to place art in a gallery space. I’m interested to see how the work will be affected by its placement within the gallery space. All work will be created using porcelain, or porcelain slip, and will adhere. I’m interested in the fragility and sterile quality porcelain poses. All the work will be produced in the space that it will be displayed. Reason being it will allow observation of the material changing from its wet state to bone dry in the gallery. I have specific locations that I have already picked out for the work to be installed: Both spaces by the windows; Back wall of the gallery (shared with venue space); Middle of the floor in the front part of the gallery; Both back sidewalls of gallery space.

Chapa

Creating a life-sized portion of a house made out of cardboard. Utilization of the fireplace is desired. Making sturdy, impressive objects out of cardboard without disguising the fact that it’s cardboard. We’re also thinking of a cardboard yard/forest, perhaps.

Brent

Brent would like to create a robot-like construct using TVs and recycling the legs from the Thousand-eyed beast. Brent is interested in making a collection of cool, interactive things.

Topher

Giant 3D music ‘zine. Wants to work with local bands, perhaps, and/or work with typography.

Lauren

Wants to work with fabric and/or yarn to construct a dollhouse.

Jackie

Wants to work with cut paper images to fill the gallery space. Interested in working on a story of some kind (again) and wants to work with repetition of images.

The idea behind the installations is that we all bring something to the table of each idea. That means that we can expand upon certain parameters of each installation, within reason (I know Holly wants to keep a certain color palette in tact for her idea, for example). If you want to expand on any of the ideas above, please do so in the comments!

IMPORTANT DATES!

This Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (March 23, 24, 25) we will be meeting up to start working with paper in the Borg. This isn’t necessarily for a specific exhibit, but it is an opportunity for us to meet up and get used to working with each other in that space. Bring cutting tools and drawing implements if you want!

The Borg Ward will be undergoing renovations April 9-11th and we will officially begin working on the first installation the following week. We all need to get together to discuss availability, gathering times, etc. As of right now, we will be starting with Pietro’s epoxy project.
Also, we now have a Studio Sunday Google calendar! Check it out for important dates n stuff

Also, I found one of the big pieces of paper that we used to brain storm the Legend of En WAAAAAAAY back when we first decided to start working on the project … it’s awesome to see the ideas we had running through our heads at the time Here’s an exerpt of the ideas we didn’t use:

Characters (good/evil/neutral)

Baron von snuggles (good)

Large-breasted Princess (evil)

Fortune-telling beluga whale (neutral)

Asthmatic Cheetah (neutral)

Settings

Cherry Forest

Gnome’s Workshop

The Sighing Forest

The Edge of the World

Magical Items

Enchanted Spoon

Octopus Skull

Golden Squid Dress

Ink of Profanity

Flying Marmalade

I dunno about you guys, but I have a hankering to draw a golden squid dress…..

After many weeks of holiday whatnots and the usual winter hibernating, some of the original SS crew decided to pop in for a Valentine’s Day visit! It was good to have Tara and Heidi around after their respective sabbaticals

First order of business: Topher had an appendicitis. Long story short, he woke Brent and I up on Friday at 6:30 in the morning with a rather severe stomach ache, we drove him to the ER and he was diagnosed and fixed all in the same day! He’ll be spending the next week taking it easy and sketching for personal projects, and he should be 95-100% within the next week or so!

Tara brought a homemade heart-shaped cake with her for Valentine’s day, and it was deeeelicious (chocolate cake with chocolate filling and vanilla frosting OM NOM) and it was consumed voraciously after a pleasant dinner at the Copper Kitchen. When we returned, we resumed with some small, awesome sketchies, and good times were had all ’round!:

Tara drew a deer on a rocket!

Heidi drew our kitty Lando!

Jackie drew some pinup sketches!

And Brent has been working diligently on a new project of his: Erratic Magazine!

All in all, an extremely fulfilling Studio Sunday!

Tonight was our first venture into the world of UStream! After many discussions (more like one brief conversation… that one time…) we decided that we should try to make a UStream broadcast to help bring more people into the collective and remove the obstacle of distance between us and… everyone else out there. It turned out pretty well for the first go-around, and we even got some folks to chat with us in the UStream chat window! Despite a few hiccups and some major lag, the broadcasting thing was an overall success, and it will continue on next week (and hopefully for many weeks to come!).

Check out our first UStream broadcast here!

This week was pretty laid back since most folks are still out of town for Thanksgiving weekend and other such holiday what-nots, but the crowd that showed up worked on some lovely things!
